About Dental Implants

Dental implants are tiny, titanium posts surgically placed in the jawbone to serve as anchors, or roots, for artificial teeth. Once fused to the jawbone, the posts form a secure base to attach to crowns and dentures. Dental implants offer the additional benefit of helping prevent jawbone loss, which commonly occurs after tooth loss.

In addition to returning strength to your bite, restorative implant dentistry helps patients with missing teeth regain an attractive, more youthful appearance. A full set of teeth fills in the contours of the face to prevent a sunken look, and the prevention of bone loss helps protect your future dental health.

Implant Dentistry at Back Bay

If you are interested in dental implants, the process begins with an appointment with Dr. Parker or Dr. Miner. The dentist will first conduct a thorough exam to determine if you are a candidate for the procedure. In some cases, bone grafting may be needed to strengthen the jaw and a referral for this minor surgery can be provided.

To begin the implant process, your dentist will use digital x-rays and wax model mock-ups to create a detailed design and placement plan customized for your individual needs. Patients are then referred to a skilled oral surgeon for the implant surgery. Once the posts have fused with the surrounding bone (generally four to six months), custom crowns, bridges, or dentures are created and fitted to the implant attachment posts.

In some cases, a patient may be provided with immediate-placement restorations after the implant surgery, or temporary restorations can be used before permanent prostheses are created.

Implant-supported Restorations

Like traditional restorations, implant-supported dental prosthetics are created from beautiful, durable porcelain or zirconia. These materials resist staining and chipping, and will last for years with proper care.

If you are missing just one tooth, a single crown can be attached to a dental implant. The tooth-shaped crown blends with natural teeth and provides full function for improved chewing. An implant-supported dental bridge, sometimes called a partial denture, can be created to fill in gaps where a few teeth are missing. Dentures can replace a lower or upper arch of teeth, or both. When dentures are secured to dental implants, the problem of slippage or wobbling is eliminated.
